Quota of Wayne County awards scholarships

Wooster Daily Record

May 28, 2023

Quota of Wayne County awarded nine scholarships to area students totaling $12,000. Scholarship funds are raised by the service club, which has as its mission providing services to the deaf and hard of hearing, assist those with speech difficulties, provide scholarships to Wayne County students and aid disadvantaged women and children.

Scholarship recipients include five current college students:

  • Sarah Mendiola is a 2022 Orrville High School graduate studying mental health counseling at Grace College.
  • Abigail Murphy is a 2021 Chippewa High School graduate studying speech and language pathology at The University of Akron.
  • Keelin Lloyd is a 2020 Waynedale High School graduate studying speech-language pathology at Kent State University.
  • Brooke Fatzinger is a 2022 Smithville High School graduate studying exercise science and physical therapy at Walsh University.
  • Sammy Rhodes is a 2018 Triway High School graduate studying pediatric speech and language pathology at The University of Kentucky.

Four area graduating high school seniors also received scholarships:

  • Caylin Grimm, Orrville High School, plans to study speech and language pathology at The University of Akron.
  • Ethan Wells, Waynedale High School, will pursue a nursing degree at The University of Akron.
  • Matea Martinez, Dalton High School, will pursue a nursing degree at Cleveland State University.
  • Riley Flinner, Wooster High School, will pursue a nursing degree at Kent State University.

Quota of Wayne County recently installed new classroom amplification systems at Kean Elementary school in Wooster. The classroom amplification systems installed at Kean were provided by Quota because of a generous $5,000 donation from Jay and Kay Dodaro of Star Strategies. Star Strategies, located in Wooster, is made up of qualified financial professionals who are passionate about helping individuals and families achieve their ideal retirements. They also believe in giving back to the community. The donation for the voice amplification systems to Quota was a way to show their support for the local community.

The classroom amplification systems, when placed in the classroom, help to make the teachers' voice louder and clearer. The systems also enhance student performance, suppress background noise and provide help for students with attention difficulties, processing issues and hearing loss.

Last year, Quota of Wayne County helped 45,604 students by providing voice amplification systems to various schools throughout Wayne County. Quota’s mission is to provide services to the deaf and hard-of-hearing, to assist those with speech problems, and to aid disadvantaged women and children in Wayne County.

OUTREACH COMMITTEES

Amplification: This committee is responsible for sending out all amplification applications to all Wayne County Schools no later than September of the current school year. The deadline for returning the application is December 23rd of that current year. The committee will then review all requests and approve as many as the current budget allows.

Fundraising (Big Q/Night at the Races): This annual June fundraiser that is held in partnership with The Wayne County Friends of the Fair, is out largest fundraiser of the year. Duties include setting up all help/workers for the fundraiser, sending out signups for workers, advertising, preparing tickets, securing prizes, or other items.

Community/Youth: This committee serves the community and youth in a number of projects every year. Some have included the Christmas meal project serving 5-6 local schools and their students, providing hygiene products to local schools, school supplies, and other requested projects and funding.

Charity Poker Rib Run: This is a fundraising committee that not only brings in funds to help the Foundation committees but provides fun and brings awareness to the Quota service projects.

Scholarship: Duties of this committee include sending out all applications and guidelines to all Wayne County Schools in February of each school year. Applications are due back to the Chair of this committee by April 1 of the school year. The committee reviews all applications to ensure the student meets the qualifications and then awards the scholarships on or before May 30th. This scholarship is for current students (graduating seniors) and adult students that meet the qualifications.

Hearing and Speech: This committee has one of our largest budgets based on the need of hearing aids and hearing and speech services in the Wayne County community. We provide a hearing assistance application that must be filled out and returned. The committee then reviews all applications and following protocols put into place approve financial assistance in purchasing hearing aids. This committee also provides funding for the Summer Speech Program.

Grants: The duties of this committee is to search for available grants that would help fund the club to provide financial support to the club and projects.

Golden Age: This committee provides support to the senior citizens in the community. In the past it has included parties and donations for the Hilltop Villa (a veterans home), Christmas gifts for more than 100 residents in local nursing homes, and other requests as presented and approved by the membership.
